MEDICAL TREATMENT OVERVIEW
Botulinum toxin injections, pharmacotherapy, surgical intervention, patient education and membership in various support groups, constitute the best conventional treatments for a patient with benign essential blepharospasm (BEB).
The main form of treatment is botulinum toxin injections into the muscles around and near the eyes. The exact location of the injections sites can vary from person to person which is why it may take some time for your doctor to establish the best sites for you. Currently there are three different “brands” of botulinum toxin: Botox from Allergan, Dysport from Ipsen and Xeomin from Merz.
DOCTORS WHO TREAT BLEPHAROSPASM
Ophthalmologists, neurologists, neuro-ophthalmologists,and oculoplastic surgeons are the doctors treating blepharospasm. However, look for one that specializes in blepharospasm and has experience injecting botulinum toxin.
There is a list of doctors who we know treat blepharospasm included on each State page. It is by no means a full and complete list and it is NOT a recommendation list.
These lists are made available to help you find a doctor in your locality. Please let us know if you are aware of any other doctors treating blepharospasm in your State.
TRAVELLING WITH BLEPHAROSPASM
Travelling with BEB is no longer the nightmare it used to be. It is possible to arrange for treatment if you are going to be away for an extended period. You can consider having treatment from a local doctor whilst away from home thereby eliminating the cost of flying back. For example we had a lady from South Africa arrive in Perth needing treatment. Her daughter contacted us resulting in her mother getting successful treatment here in Perth.
Our good friend Dr Jeremy Raiter has kindly produced a pro forma authority letter which you can give to a new authorised treatment provider to obtain your treatment records. Your regular treatment provider should produce something similar which should satisfy the confidentiality protocols between doctors.
